SINGLE USE PLASTIC

Various research has been carried out globally to eradicate the menace of plastic waste. Currently, the country’s waste management strategies involve recycling of certain types of plastic, and dumping the non-recyclable plastic in landfill sites.
Sri Lanka generates 700 MT of solid waste on a daily basis, of which polythene and plastic account for 6%. Under the category of non-recyclable plastic, waste polythene takes up the highest percentage. Due to its non-organic nature, waste polythene persists in the environment, affecting the local environment and the island’s marine life.

A TICKING TIME BOMB FOR THE ENVIRONMENT

ONLY HUMANS MAKE WASTE

Due to the absence of proper solid waste management systems, solid waste is collected in mixed state and being dumped in environmentally sensitive places, causing numerous negative environmental and social impacts. Moreover, houses in the vicinity are forced live with unpleasant odours and visually displeasing sights, while being at increased risk of exposure to diseases. The failure to address this growing issue in a timely manner resulted various concerns in dumping sites around the island.

According to press reports in 2018, six elephants of a herd have died due to toxaemia, after eating from a landfill of rotten plastic and other waste near a residential area. Various other incidents of animals succumbing to the toxic chemicals after consuming waste plastic has also been reported around the island in the recent past. Therefore, our planet’s fauna and flora also suffer at the ends of this environmental menace.

It has been estimated the planet’s oceans hold close to 150 million tonnes of plastic waste in circulation at present. The breaking down of these plastic to microplastics are hazardous to marine life as it gets accumulated along their food chains.
The marine environment has been identified as the most effected through these waste plastics as majority of the waste plastic eventually finds its way to the oceans; the effects of which are further explained in a later section. Accordingly, this non-degradable, non-recyclable waste polythene needs a sustainable solution in terms of waste management.

After comprehensive research, it is clearly identified that the addition of plastics to the asphalt mix will improve strength parameters and durability of road surface. Considering the generation and availability of waste plastic at present, this technology is a viable option for disposal of waste plastic in an environmentally friendly and economical manner.
